Your IVF Cycle

STEP 1: Initiate contact with us via email, phone, fax to set-up an initial Telephone Consultation with our Senior Consultant Gynaecologist, Dr Juliet Skinner.

STEP 2: Phone Consultation with Dr Skinner. At this appointment your full medical and fertility history will be reviewed (If IVF is the treatment plan determined for you, you will be scheduled for a phone consultation with one of our IVF Nurse Coordinators.) Please fax any previous medical records to us prior to this appointment, if possible.

STEP 3: Phone consultation with an IVF Nurse Coordinator. Your nurse will discuss with you any Pre-cycle lab tests that need to be performed prior to a cycle (you may have many of these already completed which will be reviewed). You will be guided through what your IVF cycle will entail. Also a timeframe will be discussed that will best accommodate suitable dates for your IVF cycle and travel plans.

STEP 4: Phone consultation with our Financial Coordinator. This appointment is to discuss what your overall cost will be and what the financial package includes.

STEP 5: Complete your Pre-cycle lab tests. We will work with your GP, local Doctor or Consultant Gynaecologist to perform these so your cycle can commence. These tests include hormonal, immunological and infective screening blood tests for the female partner, along with a uterine evaluation. The tests needed for the male partner include infectious screening blood tests and a recent Semen Analysis.

STEP 6: Coordination of your IVF cycle. Once these tests are completed, your IVF cycle can begin. The cycle is commenced by starting the Birth Control Pill. This is to commence the down-regulation of the ovaries and gives us the ability to schedule your cycle and travel dates in advance.

STEP 7: After 2-4 weeks on the Pill, your down-regulation will continue with the use of a nasal spray or sub-cutaneous injection, for another 10 days approximately. At this stage, Down-regulation will be confirmed by an ultrasound or blood test with your own doctor so your cycle start can be commenced.

STEP 8: You will then begin your Fertility Injections as instructed. These are daily injections which your Barbados Fertility Centre Nurse will review with you and your partner.

STEP 9: Five days later you will have a repeat Ultrasound or blood test to confirm ovarian stimulation has commenced prior to your departure.

STEP 10: The following day, you will fly to Barbados where you will be met at the airport and transported to your hotel by private luxury car. Our Patient Liaison Manager will meet you at your hotel to ensure a smooth check-in and inform you of your clinic appointment time for the following day. At this stage you receive a mobile phone.

STEP 11: The next day you will be collected at your hotel for your appointment at Barbados Fertility Centre for follicular assessment and blood tests. This monitoring will continue until you are ready for your Egg Retrieval procedure. (You will be chauffer driven to and from each clinic appointment).

STEP 12: Between all procedures and appointments, relaxing on the beach or by the pool is encouraged! For those couples participating in our Healthy Mind/Body programme, your appointments will be scheduled for you accordingly. Combining stress reduction with your IVF cycle is our goal, so as to provide you with the best possible chance of achieving a pregnancy.

STEP 13: After your procedures are finished and the relaxing holiday is over, you will fly home where we will instruct you about performing your pregnancy tests approximately two weeks after Embryo Transfer.
